Come on and see for yourself
Take a photo tour of how your CSC Habitat team along side the Roanoke Habitat affiliate, volunteers and Roanoke College students built the first floor of a two story house in just under five days.
Why Roanoke?
So you may be wondering why would a Habitat affiliate in South Carolina be building a house in Virgina, and why Roanoke College?
Well, first let us introduce you to a Rev. Paul Henrickson, the Chaplin at Roanoke College. For the past 23 years Rev. Henrickson had been coming down to work on Habitat sites in South Carolina during school breaks. His passion and commitment lead him to more frequent visits, each trip bringing more and more students from Roanoke College. One year Paul and the students of Roanoke built a house during The Home Show at The State Fairgrounds It was this sort of event that really interested Paul in having the same type of build up at Roanoke College.
Before you knew it Habitat CSC was being invited up to Salem Virgina to help with their first Habitat build on campus. Along with help of the local Roanoke Habitat affiliate and the freshman students the first official house was complete. It was one of the most successful student projects in school history. In 2009 Roanoke College completed their 4th house and set a milestone as well. Every student had "swung a hammer" on a Habitat Home as a freshman.
Roanoke Home 5
This August we had just over 590 students come out to help. Groups of students would work in one and half hour shifts. The local Roanoke affiliate and volunteers lead the build by directing and teaching the students. Doing contruction work was a first for some for the students. It was a very exciting time for everyone involved. CSC Habitat's continued involvement in the Roanoke house build is our way of saying thank you to people like Paul Henrickson, the students of Roanoke college, the countless volunteers, and our friends at Habitat for Humanity Roanoke.
