Lighting tips, trick and more

So you want to know more about recessed lighting do ya? Well here are some helpful tips and useful information about recessed lights and installation you might want to know before you go cutting holes in your ceiling. First thing you should be aware of is that there are lots of different types of recessed lighting bulbs and housings. Ten to fifteen years ago there wasn't as many but now there are plenty to choose from. So make sure to educate yourself so that you get the look your wanting.

Lesson Number One: Know the types of lights

There are at least three types of light bulbs you can install , Florescent, Incandescent, and LEDs

Florescent  - Florescent light bulbs are less expensive then LEDs. Thats because they don't last as long as. However they do last much longer than Incandescent light bulbs for sure.

LEDs  - are the most expensive because they last longer and they proform better.

Incandescent  - Finally there is the Incandescent. While the new CFL light bulbs are almost the only thing you can find let it still be known that with incandescent you get what you pay for. A cheaper bulb  with half the life expectancy.

Lesson Number Two: Be aware of what recess lighting can do to a room

Choosing the wrong location and light bulb can cause the room your lighting to take on a whole different feel than the one you were planning on. Here are a few helpful considerations.

Location

Placing your lights closer to the walls is something to consider. By doing so light can then bounce back into the room thus creating a brighter environment. By placing your lights in the center of the room you are waisting light essentially. Granted if your room is large or very small, lighting in the middle would be something you should look into. However, be aware when you place a recessed light in the middle of the room you lose that reflected light that a wall can provide. All that you are left with is a single "beam" of light shooting straight down to the floor with nothing to play off of. This can actually make your room look smaller. But remember, if you have a big room some middle lighting is needed.

Other lights

Remember you don't have to light your whole room with just recessed lighting. For the sake of your room try to have different light sources. A room with nothing but recess lighting can become very band and boring. Introducing other light sources like lamps can help balance the light. You want to have a good and even mixture of overhead lighting as well as conventional lighting. It helps make the room feel more homey and it gives you lighting options for various occasions or for whatever that room may be used for later.
