The Problems with Stormwater Run-Off

Image via epa.gov

What most people don't think about or take into consideration is the effects stormwater run-off has on the environment. Stormwater run-off is not the problem necessarily, it's what that stormwater is running off of. Surfaces like roads, roofs, parking lots are not natural. When stormwater collects and runs off these surfaces it does so in unnatural ways which can harm surrounding lakes, rivers creeks ect.  Stormwater can also pick up harmful particles like oils and other artificial material. It can also cause harmful erosion and flooding. Because stormwater doesn't get absorbed by roofs, roads or parking lots like it does with natural surfaces, water builds and builds and either floods or washes away in harmful and unnatural amounts. So how can you help lesson the effects of stormwater run-off? For starters you can purchase a rain barrel.
